View Full Version : 71 Heater Core jp71ss Jun 25th, 07, 11:33 PM Does the heater core on a 71 come out from the engine compartment or the interior? It does not have AC. John Philip Jun 26th, 07, 12:11 AM The core is mounted in the inner housing. Both outer and inner need removed to get the inner case off the firewall. Novakritter71 Jun 26th, 07, 02:06 AM Good luck- the core in mine went out last month, and it's such a pain I've just bypassed it until I have the whole day to sit and pull things apart. Gloryhound Jun 26th, 07, 08:18 AM Since yours is a 71 it should be a sbc core, but if the car is a BBC and the conversion was done correctly you should have a different style core. Removal of the core is a PITA. You will probably have to remove your passenger side fender and glove box liner also! jp71ss Jun 26th, 07, 08:30 AM Oh boy!!!! More work! Thanks guys. Youngladd Jun 26th, 07, 06:32 PM If I were to do one, I would remove the right side inner fenderwell,[pull bolts-you might have to jack up the front of the car to get the fenderwell out] I think this would give you room to remove the outer half of the heater box [engine side]. The nuts you remove around the box are also holding the inner half on as it is a stud that is part of the inner half. I think I would have someone hold the heater box half on inside of the car until I removed the outer half, changed the core and reinstalled the outer half. The core DOES come out from the engine side, there is a clip with a screw the holds the core to the inner half. The reason I know is because I have a 72 with the front end removed and I put one in mine so I would'nt have to go through what you do. After proof reading, you will want to remove the fan motor before you remove the outer half of the box. Mine is a smallblock setup with no air. And one other thing DON'T CALL ME FOR HELP! . :D:beers: Philip Jun 26th, 07, 10:01 PM While it is apart check the foam covering the door behind the core. If it is in bad shape replace it now. It keeps hot air from leaking into the car when the heater is not being used, like in the middle of summer :) jp71ss Jun 27th, 07, 08:34 AM Ah come on over Dave!
