View Full Version : Weld Drag Lites
71Nova400 Jun 7th, 07, 05:50 PM I was wondering if 15x4.5inch Weld Drag Lites will fit on my stock front end. Does the front end have to be modified in any way? I just wanted some information about them before I decide to purchase them. Any input would be very appreciated.
Thanks

Philip Jun 7th, 07, 06:34 PM Jack is that 4.5" wide? If so it should fit fine, but won't let you run much of tire up there. Some of the Weld rims less than 5" wide are designated for racing/off road use only.
71Nova400 Jun 7th, 07, 07:50 PM Philip,
they are 4.5wide, but I think the stock lugs won't stick out far enough to put any bolts on. Not sure it that's normal or not. I also think the rotors will be offset as well. Let me know what you think.
thanks
Jack
Philip Jun 7th, 07, 09:34 PM The Drag Lites require a long shank lug that goes most of the way thru center and is designed to use stock length studs.
I have a set of Drag Lites for my Nova. They are 16x8 with 4" backspacing. Still need to buy lugnuts and center caps.
Big Dave Jun 7th, 07, 11:16 PM Even though the wheels will bolt up you may yet have issues with your disc brake caliper clearance.
Repeating; they are designed for racing use only (first time you pull off the strip to the return road you will know what I mean as they crackle and pop and sound like they are failing in the turn). Additionally you will need longer wheel studs (not to hold them on), but because the NHRA wants to see them sticking out of the end of the lug nut.
To complete the package you will need a tall thin rock hard tire, that may rub because of it's OD.

Philip Jun 7th, 07, 11:23 PM Jack take a look at this list (http://www.weldracing.com/wheels/details.asp?wheelid=34&name=Draglite&style=90&desc=1-Piece%20Forged%20Alloy%20Polished) from Weld's website. Then decide which wheel to buy. Plenty of choices in the street use catagory for the DragLites.
I wonder why they do not list any 16" wheels?
71Nova400 Jun 8th, 07, 12:10 AM Thanks guys,
The person selling the wheels said they are 15x4. This is a good deal that I'm not sure if I can pass on, but i'm hoping to get away with using them "ocassionally" on the street. I hope they are okay and fit my stock front end.
Thanks again

Philip Jun 8th, 07, 10:00 AM Jack I hope they are real cheap. If it were me used "drag race only" wheels wouldn't even be a consideration for purchase.
BTW look on the inside of the wheel, if they are not for street use it will be cast into the wheel.
71Nova400 Jun 8th, 07, 10:29 AM I'll have to look and see if there is a casting on the wheels. Thanks for the information. If I get a chance, I'll try to get some pictures of them on and see what you think.
Thanks
Jack

Here are two pictures of how the Draglites sit on my stock front end. Looks like the rotors will be getting plenty of cool air. Please let me know if this is normal, or if I will have to make any modifications.
Thank

71Nova400 Jun 10th, 07, 12:36 PM By the way...what size tires are good for all around use on these wheels?
thanks
68chevyll Jun 13th, 07, 08:11 PM I run 15x4 Prostars with 26x7.5 Mickey's:

Big Dave Jun 13th, 07, 10:00 PM I used to run Moroso's but they will get a flat spot in a hurry if you used them to stop the car on the big end. Also the tread is next to useless for wet driving as the channels are not very deep even on a new tire (might be why they came marked as "not safe for highway use; racing purposes only". I finally reverted to a 5.60x15 VW tire from Continetal, for street racing (I mean for driving to and from the track).

71Nova400 Jun 14th, 07, 02:41 AM Nice nova. Do the wheels on the front end look like the setup I have in the previous pictures? I am wondering if it looks normal, and if I can run the draglites.
What wheel size and tire size are you running on the back?

Doug G Jul 4th, 07, 11:01 AM Use extream caution with "VW tires". they're only rated to 85mph. Buddy on another site found out after a blowout.
