i have a 8.2 housing. I noticed on a decoding site the 67-69 camaro 8.2 rearend and 72-75 8.5 rearend have the same part numbers(1255803).
Is it possible to put a 8.5 carrier/gears in a 8.2 rearend?

I think the part number was for the axle not the housing.Did not see that.

axle tubes are probably the same. 8.2 and 8.5 internals will not interchange. 8.5's are plenty strong. i've been puttin over 900 horse on spray through my glide and 8.5 ten bolt for several years.

The 8.5" in 72 - 79 Novas will bolt into the 67 - 69 F body cars. Some of the 76 - 79 Novas used a 7.5" which is weaker than your 8.2" rear end.

8.5 inch Corporate ten bolt was the replacement for the twelve bolt in 1972. It uses the same axle as the 12 bolt (not all are interchangeable as there are 31 spline and 28 spline axles made for the 10 bolt) and has the same size pinion gear shaft (bearing size) as the 12 bolt. The 12 bolt had a 8.875" ring gear and they shrank that down to only 8.5" in the corporate ten bolt, but it still beats an 8.2", or a 7.625", and a 7.5" ring gear with wimpy axles.

Don’t forget GM may have stopped buying their 12 bolts from Spicer/Dana Corp., but people like Currie, and Moser are casting brand "new" high nickel content 12 bolt GM cases with forged steel bearing caps and 35 spline axles if you want to buy one for about the same price as a built nine inch. They don’t come with a C-clip, and have heavier fully welded axle tubes, but that is good thing.

All 8.5 rear ends had 28 spline axles up to '89. The 30 spline 12 bolt axle can be fitted to the 8.5 rear end by cutting .062 off of the c clip button. The 31 spline axle is a Ford axle.

Big gear head is correct on the 8.5 nova rears. NO Factory 30 spline axle except for 12 bolt chevy nova and camaro rears. This is something we do in the after market that works great as a strengthening upgrade for this rear. Helps increase the power potential of this differential big time which was already pretty strong to begin with. JIm
