View Full Version : alternator
jim454 May 6th, 07, 12:24 PM I get really confused when it comes to wiring ,I really need some help. Here is where I am at .My 76 has a delco alternator , 3 wire's .The bolted post goes to the battery .This is live all the time . The other heavy gauge wire should be switched power only . It is live all the time . Where should this wire be getting switched power from?I believe it is draining my battery overnight. Also as I am driving the voltage is dropping .Then the car begins to misfire because the coil is not getting the 12 volts that it needs .I usually leave the battery on a trickle charger and unhook the battery ,but this is getting old .The battery is brand new.I think the wiring is very screwed up from the previous owner.:(
nova2sportster May 6th, 07, 07:01 PM also it sound like the either the voltage regulator and goen out or the wiring inside the alt has shorted together.
jim454 May 9th, 07, 06:58 PM Did some major rewiring Sat. and Sun. Ran it today, everthing seems to be charging O.K. gauge reads 14.5 volts . If I just try to feather the gas on a hill the carb will belch , I think this is the single plane intake ,not quite into it's power- band ,2500-6500 . Anything below that it tends to weeze and cough a bit .Question? could my velocity stack be sucking raw fuel out of my carb vent's and making the car run rich?
Big Dave May 9th, 07, 08:44 PM No, but reversion from a late closing intake valve (long duration cam) could cause the intake charge to back up past the venturies and appear as a mist floating above the carb at low RPM.

Philip May 9th, 07, 10:51 PM How close is the stack to the hood? I had one that was so close at WOT it would suck the sheet metal down and cut off the air to the engine.
jim454 May 12th, 07, 05:52 PM The stack is 5" high with a K-N 11x5 sitting on top.It is popping out of a hole in the hood. The 454 has a Torker 2 cam and intake right now .It really has a good lope to it .Anything above 2500 and the motor really wakes up and comes to life .But the the coughing and weezing sometimes is annoying.
Big Dave May 12th, 07, 07:34 PM I think you found the problem; you just need steeper rear gears. I use 4.56:1 Richmond’s in my 12 bolt, but then I'm only running a moderate cam with a dual plane manifold for a 4500 carb. Single plane intake and a long duration cam needs to have a loose converter, and steep gears to get the motor up into it's power band quickly. Just hope there isn't an import car in front of you as you tach up your shifts. :noway:
:D Big Dave :D
jim454 May 13th, 07, 06:35 PM The car has a Muncie 4-speed , the rear is a 3.90 .The car is at 3000 r.p.m.'s at 65 right now . I am bringing the alternator to get tested . Fully charged no popping no wheezing ,Push you right back in the seat !! Run it for a while , it starts to act up . Not sure if my gauge is working 100 percent. It is 31 years old.I appreciate all your help guys.I think I am almost there.
jays64II May 13th, 07, 08:41 PM how's the float level ? What carb ?
jim454 May 14th, 07, 04:15 PM Floats are fine .3310 750 vac. with quick-fuel metering blocks.
jays64II May 14th, 07, 05:25 PM I don't think the motor is seeing enough signal. I'd have an 850 double pumper on that motor.
jays64II May 14th, 07, 05:30 PM you may also want to look into a different intake too. the torkers are not a very good design. the torker cam and manifold kit are pretty mild pieces so with a big block and a 4 spd I think you would benefit more from an intake and carb swap.
jim454 May 19th, 07, 05:41 PM Found some more wiring that was not hooked up right .Alt. tested o.k..It is fully charging now and I have full power going to the alt and out to the battery. Also the coil! This thing run's very strong now ,it really throws you back in the seat. Thanks for all the help.
