View Full Version : Help ID Nova
tim68rsss Apr 27th, 07, 07:46 PM Camaro guys needs help with Nova ID. Can someone tell me what year this is and do you think it is a true SS. It has a 12-bolt and SS steering wheel. I haven't seen this car in person so no #s to list yet. If it is a true SS what kind of value? No motor. Thanks!

72GreenRally Apr 27th, 07, 10:52 PM I think I recall seeing that car on ebay before.
The 12 bolt is a good sign, as are all the SS emblems in the right places. It is a '69. Other things to look for as clues to being a real SS are power front disk brakes, this was standard on SS Novas. Also look at the rear mounting studs on the hood ornaments. On the underside of the hood, there should be brackets from the rear studs to the hood brace. Also look at the holes where the hood emblem mount. They should look like they are punched, not drilled. Same is true for the mounting holes for the rear panel between the tail lights. It looks like the interior may be ripped out, but I couldn't tell for sure. The only way to really tell 100% if a 69 is an SS is with documentation. If you can find a broadcast sheet in the car somewhere, that will clench it.
I can't help on the pricing, but somebody else may be able too!!
tim68rsss Apr 27th, 07, 11:54 PM Thanks for the tips! Don't think this car has been on Ebay, but not 100% sure. The guy doesn't seem to be the Ebay type. Will the Vin # or Cowl tag tell me anything about it being a SS car? Was wanting to restore a 67 Chevelle or Camaro but those prices are nuts. I feel like Novas are going to go up in value over the next few years.
tim68rsss Apr 28th, 07, 11:05 AM Looks more and more like a true SS, it does have power disc brakes. The car comes with a M21 and 350 motor. Not sure the condition of the motor. The guy wants $3500. Worth it?
Big Dave Apr 28th, 07, 11:09 AM I'd buy it if it was around here. Looks authentic to me. Ansen wheels and Gabriel air shocks; just need my old polyester (taylored to cover my expanded girth of course) leisure suit and a Disco ball.

Youngladd Apr 28th, 07, 11:53 AM By looking at the pic's, I saw the front bumper has been changed, if it were to be a 69 it would have small parking lights and larger cut outs. from the pic's it appears to have a front bumper off of a 70-1 or 2. [By looking at the pic's.]
tim68rsss Apr 28th, 07, 09:08 PM I'm not sure what year it is. What years had those louvers?
Youngladd Apr 28th, 07, 11:46 PM It looks like a 69. The tailights are 68-69,the side lights are 68-69, the ignition key on the colunm is 69, 68 still had key on the dashboard. I believe it is a 69 and someone put a different front bumper on it for some reason.
Gloryhound Apr 29th, 07, 09:58 AM It looks like a good project with the right stuff to be an SS. I didn't see the 4-speed hump on the one interior shot. As for the hood louvers I believe they were used on 68 through 72 Nova's. The trick is while it is easy to modify an aftermarket or origional non SS hood to have them, only origional SS hoods will have the correct bracing. As for the pricing on Nova's compared to the Chevelles and Camaros they are catching up quickly anymore. When I first got my project I bought three cars a 69 fake SS, 72 true SS, and 74 and now have all the major pieces for putting the 72 SS together. I paid a total of 1100 for all three. I've probably bought another 1500 in parts and with everything I have laying around I could slap the 72 together to make a complete high optioned car. From what I've seen you can't get into a Nova coupe for under 2000 anymore and it would need major work and probably be missing critical components.
Youngladd Apr 29th, 07, 10:55 AM I agree with Gloryhound on the hood, the fender louvers were used from 69-71. I believe it to be a 69. I do know that I would look at it very seriously with a strong mindset to buy! You don't even want to know what kind of jack I gave for my 72.
tim68rsss Apr 30th, 07, 11:02 PM Went back to look at the car again. The hood, which has to be replaced, does have the tabs for louver bracing towards the back. It does have power disc brakes on the front. Looks like it has two gas lines going to the rear as well. Cowl tag says it is a 2-door, V8, black custom interior with bench seat, garnet red exterior, and built 2nd week in December. Door panels do not have the white vertical stripe but does have a section on the top that has the word Nova on it. It this because of it being custom interior?
The car is going to need most of the body panels replaced. Floor boards look okay but who know once they are cleaned up. I'm leaning toward getting this car whether it is a true SS or not. I'm beginning to believe it is though. The owner says it is and I can't find anything that says its not. Anyway, I feel that the 12-bolt, M21, and 350 is worth $2K. Is the rest of the car worth $1500, I would think so. I would probably have $15K to $18K when all said and done. With Chevelles and Camaros bringing crazy $$$, Novas have to catch up sometime over the next few years.
tim68rsss May 20th, 07, 07:21 PM Picked the car up today and to my surprise the original M20 and 350 was part of the deal (verified VIN #s on both) :) Wasn't really expecting that even though the owner said he thought he had both. He didn't know how to determine. Now the real fun begins!
