Installing Disc Brake Kit On 64 Nova Wagon Going To Use Kit From Summit P#ssb-a123-3. Planning On Using 14 X 7 Rally Wheels. Looking For Imformation On What Size Tires To Use As Far As Clearance And So Tires Don't Look To Small As Far As Wheel Well Opening.

I had the same question a few months back, and someone posted this photo that will hopefully answer your question. The pointed area must be level or flat with no rise or angle. If it is level and flat, then it should fit with the disc brakes.

Hope this helps..

Welcome to the board. Tool Box, What 71Nova400 is showing with his picture is a flat rim that doesn't have a ridge that would normally be found inside a steel wheel to ease installation of the tire (the bead falls down into the low area inside the rim that is a ridge on the back side of the wheel). Without the bead ridge the bead must be stretched when mounting the tire (which makes hand mounting impossible, and will require lots of tire lube to get your tires on without teaming the mounting area of the tubeless tire.

That wheel is a 15" rally wheel I took off of a 70 Impalal with disc brakes. There is enough of a drop in the very center to ease the tire mounting, although I would not try it manually. All GM disc steel wheels thru the late 70's were designed like this to clear the calipers.

i don't think any of the factory original 14" rallys will work because of that area. Maybe the aftermarket 14" wheels are designed more like the later 15x7 from the early to mid seventies....i'm not sure. You can fit 15x7's on it and run a 225/50/15 tire on it.

I have noticed that the 14inch rally wheels with "YW" code will fit factory single piston disc brakes.

69 - 72 Chevelles had disc brakes and 14" wheels, so did Novas. The 4th gen Novas all had disc brakes with 14x6 wheels standard.

Phillip is correct. But i'm not sure if the inside of the wheels are the same. The Chevelles had the SS1 wheels on them. The later stuff came from the factory with a 14x6 wheel with 3-1/2" backspace and the 14x7 have a 4-1/4 backspace. That 3/4" may be the difference but I cannot say for sure. Just food for thought.

Jamie The tire size selection can be tricky as published sizing info can not only be hard to visualize on the car, but the tires with same specs can actually be different when mounted. Find a tire shop that will mount some of the type you want in different sizes so you can see how they look. Here is a link (http://www.novaresource.org/g64.htm)to some photos of other cars that could give you some sort of starting point.

I went out back and dug out all the 14" disc brake wheels I have and measured them and test fit them on my 75 Nova for you. The kit you are ordering has the same diameter rotor and uses the same caliper as my Nova.

The wheels are all 14x6 the first was from my Nova code UA with a 3 3/4" backspace, the next was from my 79 Regal that has smaller calipers than the Nova, code TX with a 3" backspace, next are two rallys of unknown years. First one is an XG code with 3 3/4" backspace and the other is a YW code with a 4" backspacing.

If you plan on using a 7" wheel with at least 3" of backspacing you should be fine. SSBC does not indicate if the kit will set the wheels farther out than the stock drums. This is a possibility with some conversions so you may not want to order your wheels until you know for sure.

One other thing worth checking before you order your kit is to check with Frank and Lisa at GPSuperstores (one of our sponsers). They had a discount running on SSBC products and it still may be available. Here is info from their website.
GPSuperstore.com is offering a Group Purchase on all Stainless Steel Brakes products. GP Superstore members will receive an excellent discount on all Stainless Steel Brakes products. GP Super Store members will receive a 10% + discount. Discounts will vary from product to product but will beat other advertised pricing. You must email or call with part numbers for your member pricing. We need a minimum order to do this Group Purchase. This GP starts on August 1, 2006 and is available until minimum order is met. This is a GP Superstore GP for Stainless Steel Brakes not a Stainless Steel Brakes GP, so any questions in reference to purchase should be made directly to GP Superstore. To find your part number, application and technical information, go to Stainless Steel Brakes website: http://www.stainlesssteelbrakes.com or contact us at: tech@GPSuperstore.com. You can also phone GP Superstore tech 8AM to 8PM eastern time at: (407) 832 1752.

Philip,Thanks for all the help and information. I talked to a guy at a local tire store and took your advice and were going to try diffrent tires until we find what will work. Also talked to him about my brake kit and he said he is familiar with the ssbc brake kit and said shouldn't be a problem.
Thanks again for all your help. I'll keep you up to date. Almost forgot found a set of 14 x 7 rally wheels from a friend said he'd take $50 for all 4 if they work.

I am in the midddle of one of these now. I am using a kit from ABS(American Brake Specialties) designed to fit 64-72 Chevelle, Nova, Camaro with factory 14 inch wheels. Uses a different rotor and caliper. Now installed they clear 14 X6 rally wheels nicely. Not without trobles though as they sent a kit with alot of incorrect parts. Lotsa wasted time so far.
