I have a 67 with the stock front end & the front sump oil pan. I am giving thought to a big motor. What are you guys doing with 383+ c.i. engines and the oil pumps / oiling systems.

Thanks,

Tim:beers:

Rear sump oil pans are available and any SBC will cause oiling problems if not addressed. The oil will go to the rear unless controlled and the stock pan is NOT ENOUGH !

Canton makes the nicest best fitting and susp. clearing rear sump pan on the market. I've used them all. There is a specific pickup tube for it and use a moroso high volume pump and you'll be set.

Are there any issues with oil filter clearance? i recall something about the early Nova V8's having a recessed filter area.

the only oil filter issue is with under chassis headers like the 1-3/4" primary tube hooker super comps. You just need to use a stock type short filter. The truck type filters are usually too long.

They had steel canisters with drop in filters initially, then they went to the standard half quart spin on disposable.

Oil control is always an issue with a stock block small block because the mains get fed last. Since the sump is in the front on the early Chevy II's the oil wants to puddle under the oil pump and climb the rear of the crank on acceleration with a stock Chevy II oil pan. You are going to need baffles and scrapers as well as a full pan windage tray to control it.

even if u use a short filter, with the hooker super comp 1 7/8-3 1/2" collector header,u cant change the filter without dropping the header,i ran a moroso deep sump pan on my 383 in my 70 nova, and i think that pan worked great, with a mehling high volume pump of course.--Dan

with the stock front sump oil pan the long pick up tube comes close to the crank of a 327. so anything larger than a 327 crank would hit the pick up tube. best thing to do is like everyone else said GO REAR SUMP!!! also change to fender well exit headers you will be glad you did you can run 1 3/4 without cooking the starter or having any trouble with oil filters.
