i just bought my 68 nova last september and included in the sale was a set of cragar 14" alloys with practically new bfg rubber. now, i really want to upgrade the front brakes to power disks ASAP, but i don't really want to have to buy new wheels and tires if i can help it. it seems all the kits i can find are for 15" or larger wheels, except one wilwood kit that supposedly will work with 14s, but it's a little pricey and not even a complete kit (i think it's just rotors, calipers and lines). does anyone have any ideas how a guy that's kinda on a budget can convert to disks and retain stock wheel size, or am i pretty much screwed? thanks!

Welcome to the site. That is a very nice looking 68.

If you use the stock disc set up from a 69 - 72 Nova or Chevelle you can still run the 14" wheels you have. The drum spindle can be modified to accept the caliper mounting bracket and the disc hub and rotor.

Read the first post in this thread from Team Chevelle (http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=115940) for the details on converting your car to front disc's for under $350.

If you machine your drum spindles I remember seeing somewhere that it widens your front stance and by the looks of your existing wheels you don't have much more room. You need an original style conversion. I think Ground Up sells an original style conversion. Now this still will not guarantee the fit. I know that the steel 14" rims had some that would fit and others that will not. Your wheels are aftermarket so the odds are in your favor that they are designed for both, but no guarantees.

The machining of the spindles doesn't cause the wider track it is the wheel mount area on the rotor that causes it.

I did this conversion on my 68 Camaro with 14 " Cragers. Used the stock set-up like Philip mentioned and machined my stock spindles. You can also find spindles that are already machined. Everything fit together real well. I've had the Cragers for years and did'nt want to give up the look either, or fork out for new rims! good luck
