I have come across some articles about people grinding down an area on their drum spindles to adapt to the disc brake backing plate. Is this possible? Where can I find some detailed information about this? Does anyone have any experience with modifiying their drum spindles to fit disc brakes?

Thanks

Yes it's quite do-able... The stock drum spindle needs the top boss machined so a claiper mounting bracket can be bolted to it. If you use a disc spindle you need to make a spaceer for the top boss.

Then you need to use a drum hub and it needs to be machined down to fit the hat of the rotor you plan to use.

Here's an overview that should get you familar with the parts and pieces needed for a swap.

It would be a cheap way to go for someone who is a machinist or has access to machine shop equipment. If you end up having to pay to get the machine work done it probably is not the best way to go as the rates machinists charge would off set the cost difference between the cost of new spindles minus the value of the old drum parts in scrap metal. This would be equal to what I have realized while constructing my car rotisserie. It would not have cost that much more in the long run to buy a new one than building my own. The only benefit of these types of projects are the experiences gained which are hard to put a dollar value on!

So-Cal Jack. There are several companies that make an after market Disc brake kit to where the spindle does not have to be cut/machined. I went the old route with my 6T6 using all of the 68 to 72 GM stuff. I had my Spindles machined. Now my front tires scrap my fenders because the track is 1/2 inch wider on each side. I wish some of these kits would have been around years ago. I am even looking at swaping mine over to one of these newer kits.

I am keeping my options open. It's a toss up..if I want to buy the kit piece by piece....or a complete package. I'm just looking for the best price.

6T6,
Have you put spacers in the fender brackets? When I did my disc conversion (machined spindles like you did) there was an aweful rub on the front fenders. I put spacers (about 5/8" I believe) on the fender brackets to push the bottom of the fenders out slightly and the rubbing stopped.

I hope this is of some use to you.
