View Full Version : BEYOND frustrated, please help

To make an incredibly long story short... I paid to have my nova that was once a column shift 6 banger swapped to a 350 with a muncie 4 spd while I was doing the military thing...I got screwed and bad; to the likes of a 400 flywheel hooked up to the 350 and numerous other little things that just weren't right or how I would have done them.

After basically re-doing (correctly) all the work that was done, I am now as the title states beyond frustrated. For some reason, I can no longer shift correctly. My hurst shifter which the guy clearly had laying around his garage and just bolted to the muncie may be just crap -- if it is, would that be the reason for the shift problem? I've been under the car for about 2 hours now playing with the shift linkages and getting everything where it needs to be and all that (now the real frustration) -> when the car is jacked up and the rear wheels can spin freely I can row and literally bang through the gears its beautiful. So, I thought I had fixed the problem and it was just the wrong link adjustment however when the car is on the ground and not supported by jacks - just regular driving I cannot shift as I could when it was supported. from 1st to 2nd isn't a straight down motion I have to 'look' for the gear and when I do get it there it sounds and feels like I'm down shifting though I'm really going up a gear, then third isn't too hard, but fourth feels non-existant, and again when I find it, it makes the downshift feel and noise. Why can i shift freely when the car is up in the air but not during regular driving? When I had first picked the car up from the kid, though it was like driving a helicopter because of all the vibration from the wrong flywheel and exhaust rubbing on the floor, I could still shift in the regular h-pattern. Now with the car running right and everything done I can't shift, please tell me its just the shotty old hurst and not anything major (and if it is...what do yall reccomend for a 1980 GM 350 motor and a muncie 4 spd 'rockcrusher') A friend said it may be as simple as adding transmission oil as it was low when we dropped the trans to fix the flywheel issue- is this a likely possibility? Thanks for the help in advance, certaintly appreciate it :)

Are the shift arms on the side of the transmission upside down? That would make 1st gear actually 2nd, and 3rd gear would actually be 4th. The arms should be up.

when you say the arms should be up... are you saying the rod is slanted down or up when it meets the transmission key? And secondly, why would i be able to run through the gears with the car suspended without a problem, but when the car is on the ground and completely unsupported the problem returns?

I believe Gear head is talking about the arms that BOLT to the tranny. Forget about the shifter and iinkage focus on the arms. To answer the question about up in the air, you won't feel it in the seat of the pants until you drive it. Hope this helps. GOOD LUCK!

To make me feel better, the arm for reverse should be down, I THINK! Your playing with a 30yr. old memory. GOOD LUCK AGAIN!
