A co-worker of mine said he would sell me a th-400 that was rebuilt with performance clutches. B&M shift kit etc.. He said it was rebuilt and bench tested but never installed, it also comes with a 3,000 rpm stall. i was wondering how much these trannys run for? i was thinking of rebuilding my th-350. But this sounds like a good deal, to good to pass up. plus i know the th-400 can handle alot more power. any thought?

TH400 was never installed in a SBC Nova or Camaro. They were installed in Corvettes and big Impalas with a SBC because in the case of the Corvette it had bigger stickier tires that could plant hard and break a TH350, the same for the Bigger cars and pick-up trucks (if tires are not your weakest link, then something else has to give when the irresistible force is applied). Now the Th400 is stronger than any TH350 you will find; BUT it is heavier and has more parasitic drag (internal friction) than any TH350 you will ever find.

Check with a local tranny shop on getting the 350 built to handle the power your engine is putting out. It may be cheaper than buying the 400. I ran a 350 behind a built big block for many years without any problems. In stock form it lasted 5 years before needing rebuilt. I had a local rebuilder put some high performance clutches in it and no shift kit. It was still going strong 6 years later when I sold the vehicle.

i checked with a couple tranny shops to get my th350 rebuilt it would be $695. the other shop told me it would be around $650. but the 2nd guy told me he has a buddy runinng the same transmission the only diffrence is a manual valve body, hes runinning 9.99 in the 1/4 mile. but then again the th400 is about $150
less then the rebuild.

Don't forget to add in the cost of a new transmission cross member, getting your driveshaft cut down and rebalanced, new transmission driveshaft yoke, new u joint. It might not be such a great deal in the long runif you are not going to run the HP.
