View Full Version : Going to get my 1st Nova
Kudagra Jan 27th, 07, 11:24 PM Well its not actually mine. We bought it for my 9 y/o. Its definatly a project but thats what I want. Ive been into Fords, VW, and Jeeps and this will be my 1st GM project but not the 1st older GM Ive been aquainted with. My dad (who pretty much taught me everything) had a 65 El Camino and a 64 2dr Skylark.
So this project is 3 fold. I always loved the early Novas. This is a chance for my son to learn how to do alot of mechanical work (so I wont have to do everything) and be his 1st car.
Its a 1965 2dr sedan with the 6cyl/3 on the tree. It comes with a bunch of parts and a v8 subframe. Id love to do a nice mild 327 and a 4 speed (because teaching a kid to learn to drive in an Auto is just lame)
Anyway..Ill be here a bunch..gotta get up early to get the 700 miles to the car and back in the same day.
Big Dave Jan 28th, 07, 10:37 AM Good luck and have a safe trip.
Gloryhound Jan 28th, 07, 10:58 AM Sounds like you have a good plan! Welcome to the site. If it were me I might consider keeping the six and 3 speed (just move it to the floor) while he initially learns. Those GM I6 engines are hard to destroy and the 3 speed is a lot cheaper than a 4 speed.
Philip Jan 28th, 07, 11:29 AM Welcome to the site.
Father son projects are awesome as you probably know from working with your dad. Not only the end result of having a nice car, but the years spent together strengthing the bonds between father and son is something you can't place a dollar value on. This hobby helps young men focus there money and time in a productive goals rather then have the idle time that can lead to trouble. Enjoy your trip, take lots of pictures and start a scrap book so that he can someday sit down and relate to your grandchildren what a great experience he had with his dad.
Here is a photo of my son Ethan at 9 years old helping assemble the 406 that unfortunately is still on the engine stand 7 years later. A divorce and his discovery of the opposite sex has lead to set backs in our relationship but hopefully someday we will build him the car we talked about.

jays64II Jan 28th, 07, 03:12 PM good luck with it. hopefully your boy is as gun ho as you are. they are neat little cars. if this is gonna be his car that he is gonna drive everyday for gods sake put brakes on it !!! The factory single resevoir master cyl. system and drum brakes was horrible! Go right for disc brakes all the way around.....easier to maintain and you will happier and safer in the long run. I'd do all the cosmetics and mechanicals on it to and keep the L6 so he can get his feet wet....maybe a saginaw 4 spd and a 500 cfm holley and some 3.73 gears to give it a lil pep...then go for the 327 swap and he'll be ready for it.

Lets not forget Father daughter relation ships! Once my daughter gets around 6-8 I plan on having her help me out. Once she gets about 10 I figure I'll get her a car. I've still got to pull her back from the dark side though, ever since she saw a Pink 66 mustang at a car show she keeps saying she wants a mustang!
Kudagra Jan 29th, 07, 02:41 PM Welp. I got it back. Ill be putting pictures on the site. There are a few things that soured me on the deal. 1st off on Friday he told me he was going to be there Sunday morning. Im thinking GREAT I can leave at 1am and get there at the break of dawn then get outta there and home a little after lunch. Nope. I called him Saturday and he tells me he wont be there till Noon. Oh well. Ive been putting this off for 3 weeks because it snowed each weekend. Then I had my transport back out. I than had to find an alternative. U-haul. So we head off at 6am. Get there at Noon. Boring drive across Missouri and Illinois. We arrive and take a look at it. It looks like in the pictures.
Here is the auction.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=006&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=160068185244&rd=1,1
Here is the wording if you are at work and its blocked.
This is a 1965 Nova with an extra doors, fenders, some interior parts, front sub frame with V-8 mounts. The car does not come with the trailer, the car has a 6 cylinder engine, 3 speed transmission, it is 5 lug bolt pattern. You might need this for a restoration project. No title but I will provide a bill of sale. It must be picked up in Illinois or delivered at a cost of $1.00 per mile. prepay at least 25% with paypal and balance in cash or money order. Buy It Now price is $1000.00.
My friend talked to him before the auction was over and he said it came with a complete interior. Well...thats heresay I suppose. Thats not my beef tho.
The car has NO engine or transmission. No pedals. No drive shaft or linkages for clutch, brakes (or MC) or gear selection.
Am I wrong for being miffed? I already payed for it through Paypal. The main reason we got this car was because my 9 y/o chose it. I just want what I paid for.
The rust is just as bad as expected. Im not worried about that.
Another thing...turns out he was home at 5:30 in the morning. When I was told this it really burned my ass. I could have been home by 3pm and still have a day left to relax.
Needless to day Im a bit unhappy. I send him a calm message asking how he wanted to resolve this.
On a side note..all the extra parts were 30 miles away in mostly the wrong direction. You would think after 3 weeks he could have put them with the car.
Atleast he gave me 20 bucks for fuel to get down there.
The time I lost and lack of a complete car dont make me very likely to give anything better then neutral feedback.:(
Kudagra Jan 29th, 07, 03:04 PM I just went outside to decode the vin...cant find it. I think he yanked the plates off.
jays64II Jan 29th, 07, 04:01 PM I'd get on all that ASAP with Ebay and Paypal. I used to sell tons of stuff on ebay and had a 99% rating at over 600 transactions. Find out through both DMV's about the bill of sale , missing title , and vin tags goes. He must provide a good vin# to even post the car for it to be legal. I don't do ebay too much anymore. Luckily people come to me now but I will still throw something up there every now and again.
55project Jan 29th, 07, 10:31 PM You better look at the hidden vin #'s and get them checked to see if the car is legal before you sink any cash into it..
Pull the front tire and look to the right, back towards the cowl. Between the fender and the cowl,it's a seam or lip that runs up and down, (sometimes the factory cover will have to be removed) clean it off with a wire brush and you'll see the hidden vin, well the second half anyway.. The first half tells year, model, eng, trans and where it was made..
Good luck with it,, i spent a lot of time and watsed over 1-2 K on seaching for a Nova, I found alot of junk and missing and miss matched vins.. Seems to be pretty common on the old Novas..
Gloryhound Jan 29th, 07, 11:16 PM I would have reported all this to E-bay and Pay pal. I'm not sure if you can do much about it since you took the car other than leave him Neg feed back. I always print an add out on E-bay and take it with me. That way if anything is wrong you can point it out then negotiate. I would say that a I6 engine and 3 speed tranny is worth at least $200.00 by the time you throw in all the missing linkage, bell housing, and everything else.
Kudagra Jan 30th, 07, 01:36 AM yea hind site is always 20/20. I wasnt sure of the wording till I got home and looked. When I did I promptly messaged him. I want to do all this though ebay or paypal.
Thanks 55project. It was right there where you said. Good thing that fender is pretty rotton. I didnt feel bad at all bending it off. I got the last 8 digits. I also found a bunch of Tax paperwork for some guy in Florida (like the window inspection sticker says) from back till 68. He died in May of 69. But the window sticker is for 1974.
I would just like to know if it what the 1st part is.
Is there any way to contact GM about a vin number?
task125 Jan 30th, 07, 08:50 AM I bought a car from a car dealer on Ebay, car was 7000.00 gave them a 2000.00 deposit with my credit card,Car was not what they said it was from there description.Ebay did nothing for me ,the credit card company refunded my 2000.00 after I showed they lied on there ebay auction.
I am looking for a nova now.I hate to deal with e bay but it seems they have the most cars to choose from.
As far as the negitive feed back that dealer just gave me some BS negitive feedback so its a case of he said she said.
Kudagra Jan 30th, 07, 04:10 PM Added info...
GM can research VIN info at $50 an hour... yikes....

Kudagra Jan 30th, 07, 09:51 PM So I found the old recipts in the glove compartment. One for a rebuilt powerglide. It also had a phone number which just happened to be good. I talked to him for a while and found out he bought it from an estate sale in 1995. It was a 6cyl/PG car. So Ive been trying to build the vin. Im not too happy with all the descrepencys there are with the engine of the car. It could be an 11 digit or 13 depending on what site you use.
Since it dosent have chrome down the side (or holes) Im assuming its not a 400 or SS model. Or could you get an SS without chrome (I dont think I would be that lucky)
55project Feb 1st, 07, 12:44 PM The first # set would be-113115, then a letter from where it was built. so-113115N- Norwalk OH. or O or W.
The rest of your #'s are what you will need to get your info on that car.
The first # 1 / is Chevy
2&3 # 13 / is 6 cyl
4&5 #/ is 2dr sedan
5th# / is year 1965
And the 6th is where it was built. My guess would be Ohio. That's where most seem to come from.
Here is a site that will help you, http://www.novaresource.org/vin.htm
And i'm getting my original 6 cyl and 3 speed this week, it came with my new Nova (62), all complete and all re built. I will sell it cheap. If you need it.

Yea thats where I decoded mine. I found out it had a PG. I appreciate the offer but this is now in Paypal dispute and Im hoping it comes out for the better.
Removing those plates is a feloney...I hope he knows that. Or he just might find out when the cops knock on his door. But it doesnt have to come to that.
55project Feb 1st, 07, 03:57 PM Glad to hear you might be getting somewhere with it..
He should have told you it was missing before the sale.
People can be sneaky.. The vin and title are usually my first questions to the seller and i also ask if the vin plate has been riveted on. Then you have to get them to check the hidden vin to make sure the car matches the title.
And i can across some good deals on stock and a nice prostreet roller if you need the phone #'s if you start looking again.
Good luck with it all..

Task125,
You might find that www.craigslist.com (http://www.craigslist.com) is a good alternative to evilbay.
