If in good shape, yes. If ready for an overhaul, maybe for awhile. Power glides were used behind 396 engines in 1966 it wasn't until 67 that they offered turbo 400's. The V8 model differed a little from the 6 cyl version, but it should work. Big Dave Jan 28th, 07, 10:46 AM A "built" Power Glide will handle up to two thousand horse power, but at those levels there are very few stock parts left. The design itself is bullet proof, and the parts are robust; but in stock form there were differences in internal parts from the six to the small V-8 to the BBC. It will work right up until it fails, but they are rebuildable and you were going to beef it up anyway. With a dead glide you now know what parts have to be strengthened. Big Dave jays64II Jan 28th, 07, 03:17 PM the 6 cyl glide may even be a better choice because of it's 1.80 or 1.82 first gear with a stock type V8 to get it moving. just do a basic rebuild and you'll have some piece of mind that it's frsh and ready dab67 Feb 6th, 07, 02:12 PM I don't believe there is any difference in the "glide" build for a 6 or 8. If anything maybe just the planetary gearing may change 1.80 vs 1.76. But not even sure that is different unless ordered. dab67 Big Dave Feb 6th, 07, 08:38 PM The early (pre '64) 235 six used a different bell housing, with many other different parts in the six banger 'glide. GM introduced the TH400 trans in the 1965 model year for full size Chevrolet passenger cars with the 396 engine....it was available in the Chevelle and Camaro starting in 1967. The Corvette got the tranny starting in 1968....1969 was the first year it was available(RPO) behind the solid lifter BB engines...the earlier Powerglides behind the 396 motors were a beefier unit with a lower first gear... wilma dab67 Feb 8th, 07, 11:44 AM Big Dave: What other parts "in" the powerglide are you referringto that are different from the 6 and 8? dab67 |
