View Full Version : motor mount trouble
stubnosebrock Oct 4th, 09, 07:57 PM Hey guys. I am builidng a 74 2 door Nova. I bought this car with a small block and a turbo 350. I removed them to make way for a fresh 355 and th350 combo. I bought Moroso solid mounts for this car. I bought the reccomended engine and frame half of the mount. When I tried to drop the engine in the oil pan was hitting hard on the front crossmember. I shimmed both sides with washers about a half an inch and I still barely have enough room to slide a few pieces of paper between the front member and the oil pan. Ant to top it all off, the engine is so low that my fuel pump wont fit. It hits the front crossmemeber too. Ive checked and double checked, and i have the mounts Moroso says will work, but im not even close. has anyone encountered a problem like this? If so what did you did to remedy it? I know Moroso makes a shim kit, but I think I need more than what theyll give me. Thanks. Brandon
brian oneil Oct 4th, 09, 08:22 PM 1st question is why are you running solid mounts? If you drive on the strett, you dont need them, id you not running a mid plate for example in a drag car, you probably dont need them. If you are looking for something stronger than the stock type mounts, poly mounts would be a better ticket. If you car is 400HP or less, you probably could use the stock mounts and be fine for driving on the street:thumbsup:
stubnosebrock Oct 4th, 09, 08:45 PM Hey Brian. My car should be in the neighborhood of 530 horse, so I was nervous of using the stock type mounts, and I truthfully didnt keep the originals, so I bought these thinking they were the ticket, and here I set.
brian oneil Oct 4th, 09, 09:13 PM I am around the 550HP mark. I use polys with no problems.
stubnosebrock Oct 4th, 09, 09:37 PM Hmm, well thats somethin to think about, what year is your car?
Big Dave Oct 4th, 09, 09:42 PM In 1973 and up GM introduced the clamshell fully encapsulated motor mount system that will hold whatever you can throw at it (as the weakest link is the 3/8th grade eight bolt that goes through the mount to hold the motor in the car). They work fine with my 1200 horse motor and I can carry the front wheels with a two ton car.
You need to go back and dig up another set of stock motor mounts for your 1974 car.

If so I have a set of engine side brackets that will fit. PM me.
Here is a link to converting the frame side mount to poly.

bad_ass_70_nova Oct 9th, 09, 05:16 AM after market fuel pumps are a pain on the frame w/clam shells. i had to swap back to old style pump to fit correctly.
Philip Oct 9th, 09, 11:01 PM This big recessed area in the cross member should allow plenty of clearance for a mechanical fuel pump.
