View Full Version : This is what I'm dealing with... Just_Learning Sep 23rd, 09, 12:10 PM I just had surgery 2 days ago, so I'm not moving around....I did manage to take some pictures of what I'm dealing with...It's a little overwhelming because I don't know where to start.... SHIFTY4 Sep 23rd, 09, 12:16 PM i find the best place to start is with one foot in front of the other ;) one small step forward is just that... a step forward :D i'd start in the engine compartment. slowly. take your time and do a slow and concentrated clean up. not saying to be a snail but yeah, in a way i am... by going REAL slow with the engine bay clean up you'll not only get things organized and cleaned up but the time you're taking will allow your eyes to roam on everything. don't get overwhelmed just look at what you have and work slowly. most important thing is to fully recover from your surgery though... so do THAT first ;) The Big Al Sep 23rd, 09, 12:24 PM may look bad to you. but I see a solid foundation to work off of. You have a fair engine. If it's a 5.7 she is a original TBI L31 Could have a roller cam!!! Do what Shifty says. It's all fun and stick with a plan. Al brian oneil Sep 23rd, 09, 12:32 PM First place to start. Get healed up from your surgery!!! The car isnt going anywhere :noway:. NOVABOB Sep 23rd, 09, 01:00 PM Surgery 2 days ago....You deserve to put your feet up and watch the Speed Channel for a few days.. On your project.....Like already noted....Make it a fun hobby and take your time starting in the Eng compt..Don't rush anything...! Good Luck and good living ahead..!! Bob in CT Novaz Sep 23rd, 09, 01:07 PM As the guys said take some time off working on the car perhaps just look the car over and write down a list of things that you think need doing, it may get long but if you do one thing at a time and mark it off you will see your progress even if it seems slow ,once your feeling good and healthy write a note each week with some things from the list to try and finish be realistic on what you can achieve without it becoming a chore when i rewired my 72 i did a few wires each night and then double checked it was good and working. Good Luck:thumbsup::thumbsup: SPARKY69 Sep 23rd, 09, 02:09 PM First place to start. I checked out the videos links and damn! Got some get up and go!!! Big Dave Sep 23rd, 09, 07:41 PM I had abdominal surgery a month ago and I'm still goffing off (gotta milk this for all it's worth, but then again Im'w retired so I'm not going anywhere. What you wanna do and we can lay out a game plan. Up to you to generate a budget in answer to the question; How fast can you afford to go? Big Dave JAYARTER Sep 24th, 09, 12:36 AM go slow and plan! everyone is giving you great advice i just did engine , trans, rear diff in my 67 elcamino i took lots of pictures of everything, wiring, brackets, vacumn lines. Then when i started putting it back togather it was great to have them handy to compare to old motor. Took them to walgreens and had them blown up in size. Us ole guys somethimes have problems seeing. there is anther thing that 3 of us do weekly...we all have projects that we are in the middle of. Every tuesday nite after work the 3 of us get togather and help work on one car..many hands, 3 brains all come togather and help solve problems its fun and gets us out of the house. good luck, take your time and enjoy building your ride. jay and bj Just_Learning Sep 24th, 09, 09:24 AM Big Dave I hope that your healing goes well...as far as the car goes...I don't want it to be all original...I'm not against it, I know some guys are die hard for that, but I have an image of what a muscle car should be, and I imagine improvements. I want to turn it into a head turner that I can drive every day if I didn't feel like driving my truck. I want to give it to my son when the time comes for him to get a car. I've started making a list of what I know needs to be done and what I would like done on the car. I'm pretty much limited to my couch right now so it's going to be a 'minute' before I can even touch it, but that's good. It'll give me time to figure out a plan like everyone is suggesting. I have a buddy who does wiring, so he said he'd come check it out and help me with the wires that need to be replaced. We had a baby recently so momma's on FMLA, and I had my surgery so I'm on FMLA...for now that means I don't want to spend money. We're not hurting necessarily, but we do stick to a budget. Now when we go back to work, I can justify my spending. I've already priced a lot of small stuff and it's not too bad. Time really isn't an issue, I'm a professional firefighter so my schedule allows for 5 days off at a time between tours. I'm just thankful to have stumbled onto this website, and I really enjoy interacting with all of you. Now these pain killers are making me tired, and I'm realizing that they've helped me write a novel, so I'm going to bow out and go back to sleep....take care all and be safe. strtlegal Sep 26th, 09, 04:34 PM I would start with the floor, I dont want to see you guys falling through it. Everything is just simple. Time consuming but simple..looking at those lines,,did someone steal your power steering pump? Just_Learning Sep 26th, 09, 05:18 PM You have a real clean car STRTLEGAL...smooth...my car didn't have the power steering pump in it when I bought it. Does it matter what kind I put in it? strtlegal Sep 26th, 09, 07:50 PM Actually since you dont have p/s brackets a variety of pumps will work. But any Delco pump will work. you can get some decent brackets from AlanGrove components, or Summit |
