Welcome to the Team!

I have one dumb question. What exactly causes a belt to weaken? As the NHRA requires new safety belts every five years on a race car but allows a forty year old stocker running 11.000 to slide by with the original seat belts that are covered in the decaying grease of a thousand drive throughs. Can not be sunlight as most race cars are in enclosed trailers today.

Not a dumb question Dave, a combination of sunlight, exposure and repetitive use cause older belts to degrade and the fabric to fray-- newer belt webbing does last longer, but is lighter and stronger than old belts of yester year--- the newer webbing is succeptiable to the elements, but is still pretty tough!-- Racing webbing is thicker and more durable but sees a lot more use than consumer belts ever will.

I still think you should replace your safety belts on a car that shipped in 1965 with only lap belts. If you want a factory restore I would suggest reusing the original hardware and just replace the fabric with new high strength stuff. I have totaled over five cars and the safety belts allowed me to walk away with only a bruised ego. I think it should be right up there with brakes being replaced and upgraded on your cars. But that is just me.
